So, Is Solid Wood Furniture Worth the Money?

So, Is Solid Wood Furniture Worth the Money?

3. Real Wood Has Character You Can't Manufacture

This may be my favorite reason.

No two pieces of wood are exactly alike.

There are variations in grain, knots, texture and color. Reclaimed wood may carry marks and imperfections from an entirely different life.

Those aren't necessarily defects.

They're character.

That's especially important in a rustic home. I don't want everything to look perfectly identical and mass-produced. I like a home that looks collected over time.

A beautiful solid wood sideboard, dining table, armoire or chest can become one of those pieces that gives an entire room personality.

4. Solid Wood Furniture Can Grow With Your Home

One thing I love about good wood furniture is how adaptable it can be.

A console might begin in your entryway and eventually move behind the sofa.

A sideboard can serve in the dining room today and provide storage in a living room later.

A sturdy chest might move from a bedroom to a guest room and eventually become something your children or grandchildren use.

When you're buying furniture that can potentially stay with you for many years, you don't have to decorate your entire house around the latest trend.

Choose pieces you genuinely love.

5. You Don't Need to Buy Everything at Once

This is probably the most important thing I'd tell someone working with a limited decorating budget.

You don't have to furnish your entire home with expensive furniture tomorrow.

Start with one important piece.

Maybe it's the dining table your family will gather around.

Maybe it's a beautiful bed.

Maybe it's a solid wood buffet or sideboard that provides storage and becomes the focal point of your dining room.

Build around it.

Save for the next piece.

Mix your good furniture with things you already own. Add vintage finds, family pieces, inexpensive accessories, quilts, rugs, artwork and things you've collected over the years.

In fact, I think those rooms are usually much more interesting than rooms where everything was purchased together.

6. Good Furniture Makes a Home Feel Different

There's something about walking into a room with substantial, natural wood furniture.

It has warmth.

It has weight.

It feels grounded.

And for me, that's a big part of what makes a house feel cozy.

Your home doesn't need to look like a showroom. It shouldn't be so perfect that you're afraid to put your feet up.

The best homes look like somebody actually lives there.

That's why I'm drawn to rustic furniture, handcrafted pieces, reclaimed woods and designs where you can actually see and feel the material.

I think the better question is:

Will I still love and use this piece years from now?

If the answer is yes, spending more for quality can make a lot of sense.

I'd rather buy one piece I absolutely love and keep it for years than continually replace furniture I never particularly loved in the first place.

You don't need the most expensive house.

You don't need the latest decorating trend.

And you certainly don't need to replace everything you already own.

Sometimes all a room needs is one beautiful piece with enough character to make everything around it feel a little more like home.

That's my kind of decorating.
